About Brian Godbold  (28 May 1899 – 17 December 1993)

Brian Godbold joined the Natal Mountain Club in 1931, and was one the leading climbers in the Drakensberg during the 1930s through to the 1950s.  Among his achievements are the first ascents  of Cleft Peak Frontal (July 1946) and the Outer Horn (July 1936). He also made ascents of Cathkin Peak, Pyramid, The Bell, The Old Woman Grinding Corn and the Saddle. He was the first person to use pitons in the Berg, and was in the party who first camped on the summit plateau in winter (July 1936). It was thought previous to this, that it would be impossible to survive a night in snow on the main escarpment.  In 1975 he was awarded the Gold Badge by the MCSA for his achievements and service in mountaineering.

Brain Godbold was married to Miriam St. Pol and had three daughters. He worked most of his life as a Paymaster at a sugar-mill on the Natal South Coast and served in the South African forces in both World Wars.  He was known to always be a very humble and pious man.
