In the event of a mountain rescue emergency it is best to try and contact the local KZN Wildlife ranger in the Drakensberg, and report the matter to them first. If this is not possible, or if you are not in the Drakensberg, you must dial EMS Toll free: 0800 205 334 or EMS Duty cell 072 139 4091  and report that this is a “mountain rescue”. The operator will in turn contact one of the MCSA rescue organisers.

The KwaZulu-Natal Section has, since 1919, assisted and then later took the lead, in providing mountain search and rescue services in the province. The volunteer teams are based in Durban, Pietermaritzburg, and Zululand, and are trained in most aspects of mountain and high angle rescue. This service is provided in conjunction with the Provincial EMRS, SA Police Services and SA Air Force. The following services are provided:

• High Altitude Mountain Rescues in the Drakensberg
• Search and Rescue of missing persons in the Drakensberg
• High angle and steep slope rescues in other areas of the province
• Body recoveries in mountainous areas
